Enthronement of Pope Tawadros II
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has welcomed the enthronement of Pope Tawadros II as the 118th Patriarch of Alexandria and the See of St Mark on November 18.
“I warmly congratulate His Holiness on his enthronement, and wish him well in his new role,” Senator Carr said.
“I also offer my congratulations and best wishes to the Coptic community in Australia and internationally.”
During his visit to Egypt in September 2012, Senator Carr discussed the importance of religious tolerance and raised the situation of Coptic Christians in meetings with President Morsi, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Sheikh Al-Tayeb and the acting Patriarch of the Coptic Church, Bishop Bakhomious.
“We look to Egypt’s new constitution, currently being drafted, to protect and promote the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Egyptians” Senator Carr said.
Senator Carr said Pope Tawadros assumed his new position at a critical point in Egypt’s political transition.
“I take confidence from Pope Tawadros’ comments that he wishes to continue good relations between Christians and Muslims, and between his Church and the Egyptian state.
“The Coptic community in Egypt has a significant role to play in Egypt’s continuing transition to democracy. Australia firmly supports them and all the people of Egypt on this historic journey,” Senator Carr said.
