Only in its second season and the SAYC Cup has grown to truly capture the spirit of football in the Coptic community. Anthony Hanna explains.
It was an atmosphere to be proud of in the St Abanoub Youth Centre (SAYC) today as the final match ups took place to wrap up season 2 of this much coveted tournament. Spectators young and old and of all tempers lined the sidelines of the SAYC to watch the Grade A and Grade B Final of the SAYC Indoor Tournament.
It was a grand final worthy of the crowd as home team St Abanoub took on St Demiana in a 24 minute, 2 half showdown. One could even say it was a family affair, with the three Mickaeal’s in the St Abanoub team – Antonious, Elia and Abanoub, taking on the future and quite skillful in-laws being Mina Matta and Wiltar Jawjaw. In the end, St Abanoub outplayed and out skilled their opponents with some fancy footwork to finish off 12 – 8. Congratulations to St Abanoub!
But the SAYC tournament is more that just about winners and losers. The Coptic community has long supported and developed community tournaments to promote the game and the standard of skill that was witnessed by some of these youngsters is truly something we can be proud of. The SAYC tournament and its organising committee went to great lengths to recognise the values of fair play, talent and improvement and for this they should be congratulated. Hopefully we will be able to recognise the positive implants tournaments and community events such as these have on the lives of young people in the Coptic community.
Congratulations to all those that participated and especially to the SAYC organising committee for their tireless and hard work in giving back to the community. To Wael, Riad, Botrous, Sammy and team, well done and thank you for another great season.
