Dear President Obama
In this emotive letter to President Obama, Suzy Hanna describes her anguish and sorrow at the situation in Syria at the hands of President Obama.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing this open letter to you in an effort to articulate my attempt at understanding you- the most powerful man on earth. You, your ideas, your policies. I have never been the President of the United States of America; the world’s greatest Super Power, the nation that defends truth and honour. Realistically- I never will be. So, maybe this is why I don’t understand your thought process and I would love for you to explain some things to me. I am not as educated as you, nor as intelligent as you. I am not patriotic towards the United States like you. Maybe, that’s why I don’t understand? But I am willing to learn.
I understand that your main focus is the well being of the United States of America. It is your country. They are your people. Their welfare is paramount. In the face of International law, everything else is secondary.
I was elated when you were voted in at the beginning of your Term in Office. I remember the year 2008 because I loved the song, I’ve got a crush on Obama. “I cannot wait til 2008.” I felt that because of your personal background you would be a champion for minority groups. I watched your speeches and believed them when you said you’d bring change. “Yes we can”.
I look at what was promised and what is happening and need you to explain to me how they are linked. I can’t understand how it is in the best interest of Americans or the international community, that you aid the rebels in Syria. I have watched videos of DAESH men playing soccer with what seemed to me like worn out soccer balls, giggling like little school girls as they passed the ball across a dusty dirt road. Except they weren’t soccer balls. They were Christians’ heads that they had severed and continued to play soccer with.
A few hours after reading that you were sending tens of millions of dollars of ‘non lethal aid’ to the rebels in Syria, I saw photographs that did not sit well with me. A man was severing the head of a Christian man as he knelt, his head pulled back with his hair pulled by the murderer, a long silver knife, slicing his neck jaggedly, flesh and blood gushing in all angles. In a separate photograph, another man lay on his back in a pool of blood, his head gently resting on his stomach. I’m not very good at descriptions, so I tweeted it to you.
It was something out of a bad episode of Game of Thrones. However, Game of Thrones is set in a different time period, with make believe countries and make believe heroes and villains. Their dead are actors, who laugh and get back up to play other roles, resting at night in their warm beds, embracing their children. But this is 2014 so in countries where people just try to live their daily life, their dead don’t get back up, their children don’t sleep in their embrace, they lie in a hard, cold, silent grave.
How is aiding these ‘rebel’ groups helping American citizens? Does an American child get an ‘A’ grade in a history exam every time a Christian is beheaded? Do you get an extra vote in Congress for ObamaCare with every goal scored by a Christian’s head? Just make me understand.
Or maybe you’re doing this for the international community? Are Christian Syrians better off? Is any Syrian better off? Are Australians better off? Who is benefitting from you aiding such ‘rebels’? (By the way, I love how they are called opposition and rebels. Much more chic than terrorists.)
Actually, on that. How does one receive the title of terrorist? The accused, kept by Americans, in Guantanamo Bay aren’t ‘opposition’ or ‘rebels’. Al-Qaeda attacking America weren’t called ‘opposition’ or ‘rebels’. The Boston Bombers in America… They are all referred to with the ‘t’ word. Yet they are ‘rebels’ in Syria. They are ‘opposition’ in Egypt. Why is that?
You have two beautiful daughters. How can you look them in the eyes and tell them that you aid murderers? How can you sleep at night knowing that you are a Super Power on the side of terrorists? As your girls play soccer using actual soccer balls, how do you ignore what goes on in Syria?
I’m not even going to talk about Egypt and the incessant American media and political attacks on Egypt’s War on Terror, which you have condemned. You had diplomatic relations with the Muslim Brotherhood and you are upset that the Revolution upset that balance. That’s why you have been threatening to cut aid from Egypt, because the democracy- less State doesn’t deserve it. (I’m sure DAESH fit your criteria of democracy better, right?) You retaliate against Egypt’s response to the opposition/rebels/terrorists/whatever you want, even when Egyptian families have to cope daily with murdered police officers, army soldiers and innocent civilians, often with mutilated and desecrated corpses. Forget the attacks on Churches, the kidnapped Christian children usually returned as corpses, if at all. Forget the Coptic Christians in Libya (which I hold you responsible for, by the way) lying in a row, shot in the back of their heads execution style, lying in rivers of their blood, chosen to die because of their religion. That’s fine.
But a word of advice to you. Look back in your history. You backed the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan before they struck back at you. You hired 22 year old Saddam Hussein to assassinate then-President General Abdul Qasim (and we all know how that one turned out). You don’t have the strongest record of backing a good horse.
If you think that rebels who slaughter Syrians and Egyptians won’t one day turn their sights on you and the Americans that you think you’re protecting- you’re dreaming. Yes you can make change.
But will you?
