HE Bishop Mikhail passes after 68 years of service as Bishop of Asyut

The Australian Coptic Movement Association conveys condolences to HH Pope Tawadros II and the people of Asyut, Egypt who are in mourning following the death of His Eminence Bishop Mikhail.  


The passing away of the oldest Metropolitan of the Coptic Orthodox Holy Synod.

His Eminence Bishop Mikhail, Metropolitan of Asyut and the oldest member of the Synod of the See of St. Mark passed away at the age of 93, out of which he spent 68 years as Metropolitan of Asyut.

He was chosen as Bishop for Asyut on 25 August 1946. His Holiness Pope Tawadros II presided over funeral prayers at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Asyut, with the participation of Metropolitans, Bishops, Priests, Monks and thousands of mourners.

The late Ava Mikhail was born in the village of Rahmania in Naga Hamadi, Qena Governorate in 1920. He was ordained as monk at the Monastery of St. Makarius in Shihit desert in 1938. He was buried in the Monastery of Virgin Mary “Dronka” which near Asyut, as per his wish.
