ACM condemns assassination of Egyptian Attorney General

Barakat

The ACM condemns in the strongest terms the terror attack in Cairo which has claimed the life of Egypt’s top state prosecutor

The Australian Coptic Movement Association strongly condemns the recent terrorist attack in Cairo which claimed the life of Egyptian Attorney General and State Prosecutor, Mr Hisham Barakat, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The assassination of Mr Barakat came a day after an Islamic State affiliate in Egypt threatened the country’s judiciary in retribution for its crackdown on Islamist groups.

This reprehensible act attempted to sow discord and division, to disrupt Egypt’s progress, and to instill fear into the lives of ordinary Egyptian citizens. However, the ACM is confident that this attack will only unite Egyptians who love their country and strengthen their resolve to see the implementation of a safe, secure and stable Egypt.

The ACM has faith that the individuals responsible for this heinous attack will be brought to justice. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Egyptians in our ancestral homeland who are grieving during this period. We also send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to Mr Barakat’s family and friends during this difficult time.

For those who would like to convey their condolences to the Egyptian Government, we advise that the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt will make a condolence book available for signing by members of the Australian Egyptian community during the following times:

· Wednesday, 1 July 2015: 10am – 1pm

· Thursday, 2 July 2015: 10am – 1pm

· Friday, 3 July 2015: 10am – 1pm

Address: Level 3/241 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010.
