The Australian Coptic Movement Association (ACM) condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric attack in Minya, Upper Egypt, which claimed the lives of innocent individuals, including children, who were on their way to visit a Coptic monastery. This is another vile, cruel and cowardly attack that has demonstrated on the part of those responsible a callous disregard for the sanctity of life. It has sent shock-waves throughout the Coptic diaspora only weeks after two Coptic churches were bombed on Palm Sunday in Egypt. Coptic Christians have suffered greatly over the past 50 years.

The majority of Australia’s Coptic community immigrated to Australia as skilled migrants who have integrated well into Australian society . Australia’s Coptic community is spread throughout Australia including many in regional areas. In recent years, it is estimated that a few hundred have applied for onshore asylum protection. Dismayingly,  many Coptic asylum seekers have been returned to Egypt in recent months despite the recent uptick in violence against Coptic Christians all over Egypt.  The Australian Government should be increasing the intake of Coptic Christians from Egypt and not sending them back to danger.  We also remind the coalition Government of previous promises made to the Coptic Community at our own Australian Coptic Movement events in Sydney I.E that a Coalition government will increase the intake of Coptic migrants from Egypt. The Turnbull Government should uphold this promise and do the right thing.
