Asia Bibi should be immediately released to her family #FreeAsiaBibi

Asia Bibi

If the Supreme court upholds her conviction, Asia’s only recourse would be a clemency petition to President Arif Alvi.
President Alvi is known to be a close ally of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Prime Minister Khan is a well known former Pakistani
cricket player and philanthropist. #FreeAsiaBibi

Asia Bibi is a Pakistani Christian mother of five who has been imprisoned since 2009. Bibi was convicted under Pakistan’s medieval blasphemy laws
and sentenced to death for blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad after she offered water to a Muslim co-worker who believed Asia had made the
water ‘unclean’ by drinking from the same cup.

Since then the Christian mother of five has languished on death row, while her husband and children wait anxiously,
praying for a miracle.

Asia Bibi’s final appeal in Pakistan’s Supreme Court took place last week on 8 October 2018. At the time of writing we haven’t received
any news of the verdict, though the court has reserved judgement and will deliver the verdict at a later date.

While many people have been murdered by mobs over blasphemy allegations, so far the Pakistani government has never carried out
the death sentence. In 2011, the late Governor of the Punjab, Salman Taseer, was murdered by his own security guard while
Taseer was preparing a clemency petition for Asia.

We call upon President Arif Alvia and Prime Minister Imran Khan to immediately intervene to release this poor
woman from captivity. We have also contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and they advocate on
Bibi’s behalf. It has been reported that Australia donates Millions in aid to Pakistan.
