Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has called for a “revolution” in religious discourse to confront extremist ideology during a speech celebrating the birth of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad on Thursday. President Sisi also wished Christians a Merry Christmas.

President Sisi addressed the cleric filled audience and admitted that the dangerous ideas peddled by extremists attempt to pit the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims against the rest of the world.

Sisi called for a ‘religious revolution’ and a return to moderate Islamic thinking.  The Egyptian president called on the Awqaf Ministry and Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni authority in the country, to do more to combat extremist ideology .

President Sisi’s honesty and great leadership should be welcomed by all at a time when the International Community struggles to find solutions with the rise of political Islam and the Islamic State.
