Australia’s Coptic Community outraged by Libya beheadings

The Australian Coptic Movement Association (ACM) condemns in the strongest possible terms the barbaric slaughter of 21 innocent Egyptian Coptic Christians by ISIS in Libya.

This evil act of terror has sent shockwaves throughout the entire Australian Coptic community and the Coptic Christian community worldwide. For years, the ACM has been warning the international community of the plight of Libya’s Coptic community and the need for stability to be restored to this country. Stability in Libya is imperative for stability in the broader MENA region. Since the ousting of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Coptic Christians have systematically been targeted and murdered, their women and girls kidnapped, raped and forcibly converted, their places of worship attacked.

The international community’s response to the plight facing Coptic Christians in Libya has been vastly inadequate. Our calls for action have been met with a deafening silence. Such inaction in response to the chaos that has unfolded in Libya since Gaddafi’s ouster is deeply regrettable.
Since we have received confirmation of this tragic incident, the ACM has been engaged in a concerted effort to respond and act in a manner commensurate with the scale of this event. We have fielded calls from media organisations and members of our community. We have been in contact with all major political parties and the office of the Foreign Minister, the Hon. Julia Bishop. We have conveyed our concerns and requested a meaningful response to this incident, including:

1- special consideration to be given for the inclusion of Coptic Christians in North Africa in any humanitarian intake and;

2- the Australian Government to co-operate with the Egyptian Government to bring stability to both Libya and Egypt in response to the growing threat of ISIS.

The ACM acknowledges the swift condemnation of this incident by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the convening of an emergency session by the Egyptian President in response. We urge the Egyptian Government to undertake all necessary and practical measures to ensure the safety of the Egyptian population in Libya.
